Toledo followed the national trend when it developed Woodlawn Cemetery three miles from the downtown, which was outside city limits at the time. The area's first cemetery had been established in 1830 on two acres of land at Madison and 17th Streets. Ten years later city officials abandoned the site.

It is one of several cemeteries in the United States to have that name, and one of a few to be on the National Register of Historic Places.
