"Monte Walsh" is set at the same psychological moment in the West, but it takes a quieter and, on the whole, more thoughtful approach. There's a fair amount of gunplay, yes, and Marvin has a well-staged action scene where he tries to tame a bronco and succeeds in destroying half a town.
Jan 17, 2003 · Camaraderie and competition with the other cowboys fill their days, until one of the hands, Shorty Austin, loses his job and gets involved in rustling and killing. Then Monte and Chet find that their lives on the range are inexorably redirected.
An aging cowboy realizes that the West is changing and fights to keep his piece of it alive. Facing the death of an era as the age of technology invades his old-school cowboy ways at the turn of the 20th century, Monte Walsh must change with the times or die defending his way of life.
