Houston County is a county located in the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census the population was 107,202. [1] Its county seat is Dothan, which is located on the border and partially in adjacent Henry County. [2] Houston County is part of the Dothan, Alabama metropolitan area.
Established in 1903, Houston County is the youngest county in Alabama. It's home to more than 105,000 residents in 13 communities, including the county seat of Dothan. The County is administered by the County Chairman and four commissioners.
Located in the Southeast corner of the state, Houston County was created by the Alabama legislature on February 9, 1903 from parts of Dale, Geneva and Henry counties. The county was named for George Smith Houston who served as Governor of Alabama from 1874 - 1876 and from 1876 - 1878.
