HOW IT WORKS. STEP 1. In Order to Enroll into Segment 2, Students Must have Held their Level 1 License for a Consecutive 3 Months. Students can register prior to having held it for 3 months, but the start date must be 3 consecutive months from Level 1 License Issue Date. You should’ve gotten your Level 1 License.
Segment 2 is a three day course, 2 hours each day for a total of 6 hours of classroom instruction. To take Segment 2, you must have held your level one license (permit) for three months or longer and completed 30 hours of driving (2 hours must have been done at night).
Segment 2 Driver Education includes a minimum of six classroom hours and a written exam. To enroll in Segment 2, your teen may need to present their Segment 1 Certificate of Completion, Level 1 license, and driving log or parent certification of driving hours (30 hours with 2 hours of night driving).

Both segments of Driver's Ed in Michigan must be completed before you can take the driving skills test and apply for your full Michigan driver's license. Segment 1 must be completed to obtain your Level 1 Learner's License and enroll in Segment 2.
