Surprisingly, a lot of Vagabond is ripped straight from Musashi (not in a bad way). The main differences are mostly the time certain events took place and importance of certain characters over others.
The order really doesn't matter. You could read the novel if it's not hard for you to read a book with almost 1,000 pages. Either way the novel already has an ending but Vagabond's exhibition chapter covers Musashi's final days well past the ending of the novel.
It’s not as philosophical as vagabond but it still goes pretty deep. The pacing at some points is a little odd and a few characters are underdeveloped. I think that vagabond is a better piece of media but the novel is still great.
