  1. Sep 27, 2021 · These two albums, plus their live performances, earned Gojira the reputation as a leading band within the French metal music genre. Their critically acclaimed 2005 album (From Mars to Sirius) wins Gojira recognition in the British metal music scene.

    • The Way of All Flesh. This is where Gojira really became the Godzilla of metal. 2008's The Way of All Flesh is a transcendent opus that showcases the quartet's progressive death-metal sound at arguably both its proggiest and deathiest, with punishing riffing, ferocious vocals and complex song structures.
    • From Mars to Sirius. Gojira's breakout third album is an undeniable masterpiece that falls just short of the top spot on this list. The heavily conceptual From Mars to Sirius is packed with modern classics like "Flying Whales," "Backbone" and "The Heaviest Matter of the Universe," featuring absolutely no skips and Gojira's best "elephants marching" riffs.
    • Fortitude. Gojira harkened back to their Sepultura-inspired roots for their latest album, Fortitude, giving fans a more polished and perfected version of the most accessible side of their sound.
    • L'Enfant Sauvage. 2012's L'Enfant Sauvage opens with Gojira at their most ferociously rhythmic, then takes listeners on a journey. The front half of the album is all tremolo picking and double-kick drumming, just cracking skulls and blowing minds with some of the tightest playing you'll ever hear.
    • From Mars To Sirius (2005) It’s an almost impossible choice, but if there is one album that really defines everything that is truly great about Gojira, then it’s From Mars To Sirius.
    • L'Enfant Sauvage (2012) The bridge between Gojira’s past and future, L’Enfant Sauvage manages to lean heavily on the melody and mood that they were to embrace on Magma whilst still delivering the absolutely, violently heavy metal they were famous for as well.
    • Magma (2016) Written in tribute to the Duplantiers’ late mother, Magma is where Gojira really stepped into a more sombre and achingly melodic realm. The funeral procession-like march of opener The Shooting Star showed that this would be a very different record than what had come before.
    • Fortitude (2021) The five year gap that followed 2016’s Magma only served to ratchet up the expectation for a follow-up, and Fortitude delivered. Here, Gojira channelled Magma’s experimentalism into what can only be described as The Fucking Hit Factory.

As we explore the best songs by Gojira, we'll see how their music has not only evolved but also influenced the metal genre profoundly.

    • The Art of Dying (The Way of All Flesh, 2008) “By far, one of the most unique modern metal masterpieces. This is the track that plays as hell-bound souls fall into the inferno below.
    • Flying Whales (From Mars to Sirius, 2005) “This song just is the definition of a pure masterpiece. The riffs just hit you like bricks, the intro just sets the right vibe.
    • The Gift of Guilt (L’Enfant Sauvage, 2012) “Best song from the L’enfant Savage but a long mile. I have no idea how would anyone choose some of the other songs over this one.
    • The Heaviest Matter of the Universe (From Mars to Sirius, 2005) “There are few riffs that compare. This song is crushingly heavy. The scientists that argue black holes are the heaviest “matter” in the universe haven’t heard this song.”
