An inevitable imperfection in music is that the intentions of a composer may not be represented by subsequent performances. Rather than view this as a negative factor it needs to be reassessed, because music develops in style, changes in instruments and auditoria, as well as our exposure to other music, which, in turn, influences what we enjoy.
