The great escape deals with POWs, war and war crimes. The invested emotions in these human characters are greater. While there is no gore and minimal blood the deaths seem much more real. The movie itself is very good. Strong characters. Combines humor and suspense.

I grew up watching a lot of WW2 themed movies and this was one of the staples. I’d say it’s best to think of it as a war drama with the strengths being a great ensemble cast and a steady build up to the escape. I think it’s a very well balanced film with humor, touching moments, and also the darker realities of the war.

Feb 22, 2024 · The brilliant pacing, storytelling, and character work done by all those involved in The Great Escape have turned it into one of the most iconic and Greatest Films of All Time.
The Great Escape is THE prison escape movie. The film is rich with characters and the direction by John Sturges is great. Steve McQueen is the man and the rest of the cast are terrific. This movie is heroic and shows the bravery of men in the second world war.

The 1080p/24hz high-definition presentation comes from a 4K restoration that was performed by MGM, which in turn was sourced from the 35mm original camera negative and a 35mm interpositive.
