     For a basic introduction, check out the Language Grammars section of the TextMate Manual. The Naming Conventions section describes some of the base scopes, like comment, keyword, meta, storage, etc. These classes can then be subclassed to give as much detail as possible - for example, constant.numeric.integer.long.hexadecimal.python. However, it is very important to note that these are not hard-and-fast rules - just suggestions. This will become obvious as you scan through different language definitions and see, for example, all the different ways that functions are scoped - meta.function-call, support.function.name, meta.function-call punctuation.definition.parameters, etc.

     The best way to learn about scopes is to examine existing .tmLanguage files, and to look through the source of different languages and see what scopes are assigned where. The XML format is very difficult to casually browse through, so I use the excellent PackageDev

     plugin to translate the XML to YAML. It is then much easier to scan and see what scopes are described by what regexes:

     Another way to learn is to see how different language constructs are scoped, and for that I highly recommend using ScopeAlways

     . Once installed and activated, just place your cursor and the scope(s) that apply to that particular position are shown in the status bar. This is particularly useful when designing color schemes, as you can easily see which selectors will highlight a language feature of interest.

     If you're interested, the color scheme used here is Neon, which I designed to make as many languages as possible look as good as possible, covering as many scopes as possible. Feel free to look through it to see how the different language elements are highlighted; this could also help you in designing your .tmLanguage to be consistent with other languages.

     Not exactly what you're looking for, but (like Doug Crockford's vids) I think everybody who writes/edits/reviews JS should look at Chris Heilmann's slides and videos on maintainable javascript.

     In the slides, slide 127, he says don't worry so much about style guides/code standards, reformat all code checked in to VCS.

     Another reason why Crockford's JavaScript coding guidelines are a good idea to follow:

     This code (below) actually returns undefined because of JavaScript's semicolon injection - which is a damn good reason to get the whole team of developers singing from the same song sheet:

     return // injected semicolon, therefore returns 'undefined'{ javascript : "fantastic"}; // object constructs anonymously but nothing happens with it.-

     I never saw a widely acknowledged JavaScript coding standard out there. We did write our own some time ago and I published it on my blog in accordance with my employer.

     Keep in mind that some of the guidelines might be a bit outdated.

     • Use consistent casing and naming.
     • Use tabs (and brackets where available) to provide a visual flow.
     • Use comments that explain what's happening conceptually as well as technically. (e.g., //Do we have a valid user? not //Check that user_ID is not -1)

     I'm sure some more seasoned developers will have more suggestions, but those are my top 3.

     I use WiiYourself. You might need to adapt one thing or another, such as the connection timeout, but it works quite well.

     you can check this book when writing a language based on Go: Writing An Interpreter In Go. It also has a sequel , Writing A Compiler In Go.

     It shows the development of a toy language called monkey, and while monkey is not being used in production, the book does a good job of showing the fundamentals. You can read more about it on their website.

     There is a particular language that is being developed by Alexander Medvednikov, which is vlang. Vlang aims to be a production ready language, so also check it out. Vlang was initially developed in Go, but now it's compiler is in vlang, which is another example of bootstrapping.

     If you count Domain specific languages, you can argue that Dockerfile format is also written in Go, as docker daemon is in Go, and it has to parse Dockerfile.

     Well, Golang is also written in Golang. The language had a compiler in C until version 1.4, but they rewrote their compiler in Golang, compiled it with the old C compiler, and use their Golang compiler since the said version. That thing is called bootstrapping, and is a popular way when developing new languages.

     If I'm right, the language that the compiler is written only affect the compile time of the language, and the runtime speed is affected by your optimizations on the compiler itself. (Assuming you have a compiled language).

     For interpreted languages, which you seem to have, because you compare yours with python, Golang might be slower than C++, although keep in mind that this is the case if you can optimize both languages pretty well.( which is a hard thing to do)

     I think, it's not a waste of time to develop a language in Go. It's easier to develop than C++ (again, my opinion) , thus you can iterate quickly while developing the semantics of your own language. If you end up requiring much more speed than Go can offer, good for you, that means your language is popular now, and has a stable syntax, you can think of rewriting it in Rust, or C. Until than, Go should be fine.
