In 1917, Böhm became a rehearsal assistant in his home town, making his debut as a conductor in Viktor Nessler's Der Trompeter von Säckingen in 1917. He became the assistant director of music in 1919, and the following year, the senior director.

May 23, 2018 · After service in the Austrian Army during World War I, he made his debut as a conductor at the Graz Opera in 1917. He then completed his training in law at the Univ. of Graz (Dr.Jur., 1919). In 1920 he was appointed first conductor at the Graz Opera.
In 1943 got the very important job of conductor at the Vienna State Opera eventually becoming music director. He also conducted the German seasons at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires from 1950 to 1953. In his later years Böhm spent his time as guest conductor.

We looked through the Gramophone archive and found this interview with the legendary Austrian conductor from 1972 when the music critic Alan Blyth sought out Böhm in Salzburg.
First gaining a doctorate in law at the university, next Böhm studied at the city conservatory and it was in Graz in 1917 that he acquired his first job as a repetiteur and assistant conductor. He had been kicked and injured by a horse and a subsequent medical downgrading meant that he was permitted to do his national service at Graz Opera House.
