Shonda was born Shonda Lynn Rhimes, on January 13, 1970, in Chicago, Illinois, to Vera P. (Cain) and Ilee Rhimes Jr. She is the youngest of the six children of her parents. She has two elder brothers and three elder sisters.
Rhimes adopted her first daughter in June 2002 and adopted another daughter in February 2012. In September 2013, Rhimes welcomed her third daughter via gestational surrogacy. In 2014, Rhimes gave a commencement address at her alma mater, Dartmouth College, where she received an honorary doctorate.
