Simply put, a GVWR is the maximum amount of weight a vehicle can safely handle, including payload capacity, which is passengers and cargo. Most vehicles feature their GVWR on a safety label located on the driver’s side doorjamb.
The GVWR of a truck determines its class. When you compare light-duty vs. heavy-duty trucks, for example, you’ll notice that heavy-duty Class 8 trucks have the heaviest GVWR, while light-duty Class 1 trucks have the lightest. GVWR is a vehicle’s maximum weight, which includes payload capacity (i.e. passengers and cargo).

Trucks are also classified more broadly by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which groups classes 1 and 2 as light duty, 3 through 6 as medium duty, and 7 and 8 as heavy duty. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a separate system of emissions classifications for trucks.
