Simply have each player draw one card, and the play goes in the order of the cards drawn from lowest to highest. Partners sit across from each other, and play will go clockwise from the dealer. In Whist, Aces are high, and the rank of the cards is as follows: Ace (High) King. Queen.
To give an example: you hold the ace and queen of hearts. Your right-hand antagonist leads a heart, from which you infer that he holds the king of the same suit and wishes to draw the ace, in order to make his king. You however play the queen, and win the trick; still retaining your ace, ready to win again when he plays his king.

Whist’s most classic form involves 4 players, but has since been superseded by the 2-player variant, which adds the multi-phase stages which reward thinking ahead. All you need to play Whist is the standard 52-card Anglo-American deck with Jokers removed.

The top card of the remaining deck determines the trump suit. Cards ranking remains the same as in the 4-player Whist. Again, the players aim to collect as many tricks as possible.
