Montana became a state on Nov. 8, 1889, with Helena as the capital. Butte began as a gold camp. Hard-rock mining had begun in the 1880s, but shaft mining commenced when vast deposits of copper were discovered there. Butte subsequently became known as the “Richest Hill on Earth,” and the world’s largest smelter was built at nearby Anaconda.
