He completed post-graduate studies at the Romanian Orthodox Institute in Bucharest, Romania in 1975. On August 23, 1975, he married his wife Donna and they have four children.

From 1973 through 1975 he completed post-graduate studies at the Romanian Orthodox Institute in Bucharest, Romania. He is a 1986 graduate of The General Theological Seminary. Scarfe was ordained to the priesthood in 1986.
