So, choosing the right type of rope for your application can make or break its performance. A rope has been a staple tool for anything from recreational uses to industrial uses.
A rope is a group of yarns, plies, fibres, or strands that are twisted or braided together into a larger and stronger form. Ropes have tensile strength and so can be used for dragging and lifting. Rope is thicker and stronger than similarly constructed cord, string, and twine .

- Types of Rope Construction. Ropes are constructed in 2 primary ways: laid and braided.
- Laid Rope. Laid rope is also known as twisted rope because it’s made by twisting fibers together. For the majority of world history this was the most prevalent type of rope construction.
- Braided Rope. Instead of twisting strands together to form rope, braided rope is, as the name readily suggests, made from strands that are braided together.
- Rope Materials. Ropes come in a variety of materials. Most modern ropes use synthetic materials like nylon and polypropylene, while rope made from natural materials has largely been relegated to decorative purposes.
- Knot-Tying: Nylon. Although any rope can technically be used to tie a knot, some are just too stiff, stretchy and generally unpleasant to handle. When tying knots, strength is not an important consideration, but rather the flexibility of the rope is.
- Outdoor Use: Polyester. Although this rope won’t do well in an industrial environment, Polyester Rope is great for the outdoors. Not only is it UV resistant and durable, its strength won’t be affected by water.
- Dock Lines: Nylon. When it comes to dock lines you need a strong rope that will stretch, absorb shock and hold up over time. A synthetic fiber like Nylon will do just the trick.
- Tie-Downs: Nylon. It’s ability to stretch while maintaining tremendous strength makes Nylon Rope the perfect choice for tie-downs. In addition, Nylon Rope is UV and chemical resistant, so its strength and elasticity will not be affected in most environments.
- Natural. When most folks think of rope, the natural variety is usually the type that comes to mind. Natural rope is a product made from the fiber of plants.
- Synthetic. The term “synthetic rope” encompasses many, many types of rope with one thing in common: they’re made from man-made materials. These materials include polypropylene, nylon, polyester, polyethylene, and other plastic-based chemicals and fiber.
- Single Braid. Single braided ropes are synthetic ropes most commonly used in sailing and other hand-maneuvered situations. These ropes consist of eight or 12 strands of synthetic material wrapped around a solid core, half spiraling clockwise and half spiraling counterclockwise.
- Plaited. Many confuse plaited ropes with braided ropes, but the two differ in their construction. Plaited ropes are similar to braided ropes in that they both use woven strands, but plaited strands do not run clockwise or counterclockwise.
