May 3, 2024 · Woo was born in China, though the exact date of his birth is uncertain. In 1950 Woo and his family immigrated to Hong Kong, where they lived in a crime-ridden slum. To escape his surroundings, Woo often went to either the local Chinese Christian church or a movie theatre.
John Woo Yu-Sen SBS (Chinese: 吳 宇 森; born September 22, 1946) is a Hong Kong filmmaker, known as a highly influential figure in the action film genre. He is a pioneer of heroic bloodshed films (a crime action film genre involving Chinese triads ) and the gun fu genre in Hong Kong action cinema , before working in Hollywood films .
