Born in Bellshill, near Glasgow, John began playing whistle and fiddle as a child and joined the legendary folk outfit Battlefield Band aged 17. During his 11 years with the band, he also released his first two solo recordings, 1995’s self-titled debut and 2000’s Yella Hoose.
Teaching career [ edit] McCusker taught at the University of Maryland, College Park for 24 years. In 1992, he moved to Texas, and taught at Trinity University until he retired in 2015. [2] He offered courses in the general US history, US economic and business history, and the history of seventeenth and eighteenth century British America.
