West Hartford, urban town (township), Hartford county, central Connecticut, U.S. Founded in 1679 as an agricultural community, it was known as West Division Parish or West Society. It became a wealthy residential suburb of Hartford, was named West Hartford in 1806, and was separately incorporated.

But modern West Hartford's roots date back more than 300 years to the time it was first settled in the late 17th century. As a way of recapturing West Hartford's ties to its past and providing a focus for the future, signs and plaques have been installed to mark the 39 most historic sites in town.
Founded predominantly by Protestants in the 1700s out of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the small town remained rooted in agriculture into the early 1900s when first the well-to-do from Hartford and later the largely white middle class moved away from city life to create one of the state capital’s thriving suburbs.
