During his breaks from school, he performed at the National Youth Theatre, where he met Lucas. Williams changed the spelling of his last name when he joined the actor’s trade union.
During his university days, he performed with the ‘National Youth Theatre,’ and joined the actors' union named ‘Equity.’ Around this time, he changed his name to David Walliams to avoid confusion as there was another actor in the union named David Williams.
