Blackmore originally planned to make a solo album, but instead in 1975 formed his own band, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, later shortened to Rainbow. Featuring vocalist Ronnie James Dio and his blues rock backing band Elf as studio musicians, this first line-up never performed live.

Impressed by Dio when the singer’s band, Elf, supported Purple in 1974, Blackmore made the album using every member of Elf bar guitarist Steve Edwards.

- Rainbow arose after lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore departed Deep Purple in 1974 following the group’s Stormbringer album.
- Deep Purple had been in a state of continual flux since its 1968 debut, going through three major frontmen (Rod Evans, Ian Gillan, and David Coverdale), while transforming from progressive rock to proto-metal en route to what Ritchie Blackmore saw as something headed in the direction of soul music and heavy funk.
- Of Rainbow’s maiden LP, Blackmore told Guitar magazine: “The very first one [Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow] was a breath of fresh air because we moved away from the R&B stuff Purple was doing.”
- Among the other reasons Blackmore sought to stray from Deep Purple was the group’s refusal to record two particular songs: a cover of “Black Sheep of the Family” by prog-rockers Quatermass and the medieval-themed adventure anthem, “Sixteenth Century Greensleeves.”
