History of the Museum. The Museum’s history begins in 1924, when the North Carolina Art Society was formed. Its mission: to generate interest in creating an art museum for the state. In 1928 the society acquired funds and approximately 75 paintings by bequest from Robert F. Phifer, a North Carolina native and businessman.
The North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) opened in April 1956. In 1960 the Kress Foundation released to the museum 71 works of art, the foundation's largest gift to any regional museum and second only to its gift to the National Gallery of Art. The General Assembly of 1961 formally established the NCMA as a state institution and agency.

Nov 23, 2021 · When the Federal Art Project shut down in 1943, the Art Society had to pivot and make the decision to ask for state funding. Enter: The “Miracle on Morgan Street.” In early 1956, the North Carolina Museum of Art opened in the renovated State Highway Division Building as the first art museum in the country to be established by state funds.
In 1860, it was canceled as the state entered the Civil War, and it didn’t restart until 1869, after the early years of Reconstruction. By then, the buildings were in poor shape and the tents were gone. So in 1873, the fair moved to a new, larger area on Hillsborough Street across from North Carolina State University’s current location.
