The higher speed Acela, which actually has reliable Wi-Fi, shuttles business travelers between Boston and New Haven, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
The Adirondack runs once daily in both directions between Montreal and New York City, with major stops in Westport, Saratoga Springs and Albany.
The only one of its kind in the US, travelers can take their cars with them from Lorton, Virginia to Sanford, Florida, near Orlando-area attractions.
Operates daily routes between Chicago, Omaha, Denver, Salt Lake City and Emeryville, in the San Francisco Bay Area. The more than 51-hour trip passes through the Rockies and the Sierra Nevadas, making it one of Amtrak's most famous routes.
Multiple daily departures connect the Sacramento and Bay areas. The Capitol Corridor runs between Auburn, Sacramento, Emeryville (in the San Francisco Bay Area), Oakland and San Jose.
Following the historic B&O line, the Capitol Limited runs daily between Washington, D.C. and Chicago with stops in major cities such as Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Toledo and South Bend.
Operating three days a week, this Amtrak route connects New York City and Chicago with major stops including Washington, D.C., Charleston, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Indianapolis.
Actually considered two routes, the Piedmont connects Charlotte and Raleigh, in North Carolina. The Carolinian route extends the service along the East Coat to New York City with stops in Richmond, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
This route covers 900 miles from Chicago to New Orleans, with stops in Champaign/Urbana, Carbondale, Memphis and Jackson.
Linking some of the most prominent cities on the West Coast, the 35-hour-long daily route links Seattle and Los Angeles via Tacoma, Portland, Sacramento and the San Francisco area.

- Plan Ahead. Many people think of train travel as a last-minute getaway option (and they should, last-minute fare deals are out there — more on that below), but planning ahead will always work to your advantage.
- Know About Discounts. Booking Tip. Amtrak has a discount for those aged 65 and over, starting at 10 percent — thought it varies from route to route. Magliari recommends that travelers head to the deals section on Amtrak's website before purchasing a ticket.
- Check Out a Station Lounge. Though station lounges aren't quite up to par with some of the luxury offerings that airlines are investing in, Amtrak does have several types of private lounges for Acela Express First Class passengers, sleeping car passengers, Amtrak Guest Rewards Select Plus, and Select Executive members.
- Make Use of Red Cap. Carrying bags? You'll want to opt for Red Cap service, a free baggage handling service available at 12 major stations nationwide. Most travelers don't realize Red Cap is available to all travelers.
