The film is set in the early 19th century. Winterhawk, a Blackfoot chief, seeks help for his smallpox infected tribe by attempting to trade furs. In a double cross by two outlaws named Gates and Scoby, the furs are stolen and Winterhawk's companions are killed. [2]

One man agrees to lead the chief to a medicine source, but two outlaws named Gates (L.Q. Jones) and Scoby (Dennis Fimple) ambush Winterhawk along the trail. In the ensuing fight, two Indians are shot dead; however, Winterhawk gets away. That evening, the homesteaders prepare for Winterhawk's revenge.
The movie's great to look at. A pursuit party sets off to find Winterhawk and "rescue" the woman and boy (who increasingly don't seem to need rescuing), and the filmmaker, Charles Pierce populates the party and the stops along with way with a gallery of great Western character actors.
