Jun 20, 2021 · A few days ago, I wrote a blog post on trumpet voluntaries that we trumpeters frequently use in wedding ceremonies. The two most popular are the Trumpet Voluntary (once attributed to Henry Purcell, because of an early publishing error, but now known to have been written by Jeremiah Clarke), and the Trumpet Tune, which I incorrectly attributed to Henry Purcell.
THE tercentenary of Purcell's birth has afforded an excellent oppor-. tunity to summarize the known facts about the so-called 'Trumpet. Voluntary' which we now know was composed by his younger. contemporary Jeremiah Clarke. Year by year the evidence for. Clarke's authorship grows stronger, while Purcell's claim recedes.
