Answer: The Boardwalk, then came the World Famous Steel Pier. It was first constructed in 1870, 16 years after the resort city was incorporated by the New Jersey Legislature. Atlantic City was viewed as a prime piece of real estate and its development brought wealthy visitors to the newly constructed resort with ocean views.
The original Boardwalk was dedicated in Atlantic City on June 16, 1870. The famed walkway started as a $5,000 project to build a one-mile, 10-foot wide wooden platform over the sand. In 1882, the first amusement pier was built extending from the Boardwalk.
The Boardwalk built in 1890 was the fourth and last attempt at constructing an all-wood boardwalk to serve the needs of Atlantic City. The first Atlantic City Boardwalk was built in 1870 and aimed to allow people to get near the water without getting sand everywhere.
