Mar 28, 2024 · Alhambra, palace and fortress of the Moorish monarchs of Granada, Spain. It was constructed on a plateau that overlooks the city, built chiefly between 1238 and 1358. After the expulsion of the Moors in 1492, it was partially effaced and portions were rebuilt in Renaissance style.

The most famous and best-preserved are the Mexuar, the Comares Palace, the Palace of the Lions, and the Partal Palace, which form the main attraction to visitors today. Alhambra, Palace of the Moorish monarchs of Granada, Spain, built (1238–1358) on a plateau above the city. Its name (Arabic: “the red”) may refer to the colour of the sun-dried bricks used in its outer walls.
To the east of the Alhambra fortress and residence are the gardens of the Generalife, an example of a rural residence of the emirs, built during the 13th and 14th centuries. The Alhambra, with its continuous occupation over time, is currently the only preserved palatine city of the Islamic period.
