Lothair (1870) was a late novel by Benjamin Disraeli, the first he wrote after his first term as Prime Minister. It deals with the comparative merits of the Catholic and Anglican churches as heirs of Judaism, and with the topical question of Italian unification.

Lothair I (Dutch and Medieval Latin: Lotharius; German: Lothar; French: Lothaire; Italian: Lotario; 795 – 29 September 855) was a 9th-century Carolingian emperor (817–855, with his father until 840) and king of Italy (818–855) and Middle Francia (843–855).
Leslie Stephen wrote that Lothair was ‘a practical joke on a large scale, or a prolonged burlesque upon Disraeli’s own youthful performances’ (140). Edmund Gosse expressed an enthusiastic comment about the book: ‘Unquestionably the greatest of his literary works — the superb ironic romance of Lothair’ (173).
19th century romance about the coming of age of the hero, Lothair. Very psychological; the author provides an amazingly prescient analysis of the main character and his times.
