The Holland Land Company was a group of Dutch investors who bought over three million acres of land in Western New York. The Western New York land, consisting of the modern day counties of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming, was purchased in 1792 and 1793.
1613: Dutch explorer Adriaen Block embarked on a momentous voyage, significantly influencing the early exploration of the New York region. Navigating the Hudson and East Rivers, he discovered Hell Gate and explored the Long Island Sound and Connecticut River, notably naming Block Island.
Clovis, Lamokas & Seneca once ruled Western New York. Successive cultures have lived and left their mark on Western New York. The first to have inhabited the region after the glacial retreat, was believed to be the Clovis people (10,000 B.C.) followed by the Lamokas (3500-2500 B.C.), who hunted and foraged through the countryside.
