This picture succeeds as a comedy, a satire, and even, to a certain extent, as a mild melodrama about choosing between a paycheck and the nourishment of the soul. A Midwinter's Tale is also a stylistic accomplishment. Filmed in black-and-white, it's a movie of shadows and starkly contrasting images, all of which are used to their best effect.
