The Alberto express whirls on through the night, accelerating in accord with Alberto's desperation. A host of characters flashes across the screen as if glimpsed in passing through the train's speeding windows. Whimsical, comic and curious, like all of Joffé's characters, they give one the impression of being in the centre of their own stories.

Aug 1, 1993 · In Alberto's case, the tab comes to a cool 30 million lire. 25 years later, Alberto is broke, and his wife is preparing to give birth. Grabbing the red-eye express to Rome, Alberto cadges, fleeces, and begs money and valuables off the passengers on the train, hoping to raise the 30 million lire before his wife drops the bambino.
