Although Sanders claimed to have been initiated into witchcraft in the early 1930s, he was also a member of a Gardnerian coven before breaking off to start his own tradition in the 1960s.

Alex Sanders was the founder of the Alexandrian tradition of Wicca, which has proved popular particularly in Britain and Canada. He deliberately courted publicity and controversy, and was proclaimed “King of the Witches” by his followers, which created dissent with many other Wiccans.

Like many enigmatic figures, the truth of his life is obscured in tall tales, most of which were spread by Alexander Sanders himself.
Alex and Maxine Sanders were the founders of Alexandrian Wicca. The Alexandrian tradition shares much in common with Gardnerian magic. Mr. Sanders began his fore into the craft with his grandmother at a young age, and then in the 1930s as part of a Gardnerian Wicca coven.
