    Note - this is a spoiler-free advance review of Blood Feud #1. The issue will be released on Wednesday, October 7.

    Horror is a genre that is particularly well-suited comics. The problem these days is that with so many terrific horror books on the stands (Rachel Rising, American Vampire, Revival), it becomes that much harder for new projects to stand out. The hook with Cullen Bunn and Drew Moss' new series Blood Feud is that it doesn't strive to be grim and serious. This new series isn't exactly lighthearted, but it does take a relatively jovial approach to the genre as it lampoons classic '80s horror films and explores a destructive feud between two sinister families.

    The rural Southern setting distinguishes Blood Feud as much as anything else. The story unfolds in a pleasant rural town influenced by Bunn's own childhood growing up in North Carolina and Missouri. As such, there's a certain authenticity to the town of Spider Creek. The town isn't a folksy cliche or a Mayberry-esque throwback to some nonexistent, utopian way of life. It's just a quiet that has an undercurrent of darkness and foreboding beneath its pleasant exterior. After all, you don't name your town Spider Creek if there isn't something weird or creepy afoot.

    Fans of Cullen Bunn's work will find a lot to like in the quirky characters and distinctive setting of Blood Feud. Bunn and the artists are quickly able to establish their cast and setting and endear both to the reader. But those just craving scares and violence might not be immediately won over.
