Chang Apana (December 26, 1871 – December 8, 1933; traditional Chinese: 鄭阿平; simplified Chinese: 郑阿平; pinyin: Zhèng Āpíng; Wade–Giles: Cheng 4 A 1 p'ing 2; Jyutping: Zeng 6 Aa 3 ping 4) was a Chinese-Hawaiian member of the Honolulu Police Department, first as an officer, then as a detective.
Detective Chang Apana. Served from 1898 to 1932. Chang Apana’s legendary career as a police officer in Honolulu began in 1898. Although he was small in stature, only 5 feet tall, he was bigger than life. He was the only officer allowed to carry a bullwhip instead of a gun.

From 1898 to 1932, he made hundreds of arrests on Oahu and busted several drug and gambling circles. His work and life was the basis for the character "Charlie Chan."

Chang Apana, former Honolulu detective and prototype of the character “Charlie Chan” in the mystery novels of the late Earl Derr Biggers, died in the Queen’s hospital at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Mr. Chang was seriously ill for about a month and was admitted to the hospital on December 2.
