  3. Close-up tells the true story of a man arrested for impersonating Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf. The film is a joy made up of mostly real footage of the trial and interviews with all involved, and also re-enactments of real events by the actual people involved.

  4. What it's about. The take. The apex of Abbas Kiarostami’s monumental filmography, Close-Up is a testament to the late directors’ ingenuity and humanism. Kiarostami documents the real-life trial of a man who impersonated fellow Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf, and ingratiated himself to a family believing him to be the real deal.

Similar to the Blu-ray edition the image found on the DVD is held back because of the source materials. The film, which follows the actual case of a man w...

The Dolby Digital 1.0 mono track doesn’t sound great, limited by the source materials and the equipment used to record the audio. Voices sound very harsh and distorted, almost machine like at moments, and music during the final sequence suffers from the same problems. Audio drops during the last sequence as well, though this is all purposefully don...

In the supplement department this is one of the more satisfying releases from Criterion. The supplements have been split out over the two discs.
