Early life and education. Tomblin was born in Logan County, West Virginia, and is the son of Freda M. (née Jarrell) and Earl Tomblin. His mother was 18 years old when he was born.
Tomblin received a bachelor’s degree from WVU and a master’s degree from Marshall University. He worked as substitute teacher briefly, owned and managed rental properties and also worked for Southern Amusement Company, the gaming machine business owned by his parents.
