Cantor was cared for by his grandmother on New York City’s Lower East Side when he was orphaned at age two.

Eddie Cantor was born Isador Iskowitz on January 31, 1892, in the Lower East Side of New York City. His parents died before he reached the age of two, and he was raised by his maternal grandmother, Esther.
Cantor was awarded an honorary Oscar in 1956 for distinguished service to the film industry. Eddie Cantor was an American comedian, actor, dancer, singer, songwriter, film producer, screenwriter and author. Cantor was one of the prominent entertainers of his era.
