Franz Stangl was the only commandant of an extermination camp who was brought to trial. He was tried in the Treblinka Trial in Düsseldorf in 1970 and he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in the Remand Prison Düsseldorf on 28 June 1971 of a heart attack.
