- 02:05Gaza ceasefire uncertain as Israel strikes RafahReuters VideosSTORY: There was cheering in Rafah in Gaza on Monday night after Hamas said it had accepted a ceasefire proposal from mediators, even as residents fled the city in fear of an Israeli assault. But any likelihood of such a ceasefire taking place was quickly played down by Israel. Hamas said in a brief statement that its chief had informed Qatari and Egyptian mediators that the group accepted their proposal for a ceasefire. It comes as Israeli forces struck Rafah and ordered residents out of parts of the city, which has served as the last refuge for more than a million displaced Gazans. A spokesperson for the Israeli military said all proposals that would release hostages held in Gaza would be considered… But said that for now, its operations would continue. In Tel Aviv, families of hostages kidnapped by Hamas in the October 7 attack called on President Benjamin Netanyahu to take the deal. "Save lives. Don't talk about fighting and blood.” An Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the proposal that Hamas had accepted was a watered-down version of an Egyptian offer and included elements that Israel could not accept. An official briefed on the peace talks, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said however that the offer was effectively the same as one Israel had agreed to at the end of April. Israel said on Monday it was conducting limited operations in part of Rafah, following a rocket attack that killed four Israeli soldiers the day before. Omar Shakir with Human Rights Watch said an invasion of Rafah would be (quote) “unlawful and catastrophic.” “The areas that have been marked for evacuation are areas that have been decimated by Israeli forces, that do not have the infrastructure needed for human life." A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department said Washington would discuss the Hamas response with its allies. "It would bring an immediate cease-fire. It would allow increased movement of humanitarian assistance. And so we're going to continue to work to try to reach one.”4 hours ago

- 01:19Holocaust survivors march in Auschwitz in shadow of Oct. 7 attacksReuters VideosSTORY: :: Thousands march at Auschwitz to remember Holocaust victims and survivors :: Location: Oswiecim, Poland :: Date: May 6, 2024 :: Survivors impacted by Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks on Israel lit a torch at the remembrance event :: (Phyllis Greenberg Heideman, International March of the Living President) "I pray, I hope that we can all leave this place today even more committed to work together and create a brighter, a better, a wiser, more compassionate global narrative free of antisemitism. We shall not rest peacefully until all our hostages are free from their captivity. (APPLAUSE) And we promise - young, middle and old alike - to carry the torch of memory on behalf of all those who no longer have voice." This year's ceremony was overshadowed by the events last year when 1,200 people were killed in a Hamas-led rampage through Israeli towns and 253 hostages were taken, according to Israeli tallies. Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically murdered some six million Jews across German-occupied Europe.9 hours ago
- 02:23Israel strikes Rafah after evacuation order, residents sayReuters VideosSTORY: Israel’s military carried out airstrikes in Rafah on Monday (May 6), residents said, hours after Israel told Palestinians to evacuate parts of the southern Gaza city where more than a million people have been sheltering. Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa TV said Israel had targeted areas in eastern Rafah near neighborhoods given evacuation orders. This follows an overnight aerial attack on Rafah, where Israeli planes hit 10 houses, killing at least 20 people and wounding several, medical officials said. The Israeli military said it had attacked the site of Sunday's (May 5) mortar launch that killed four Israeli soldiers... and that it was conducting limited operations on the eastern part of Rafah in response to that mortar strike. Palestinian families began fleeing to what the Israeli military called an ‘expanded humanitarian zone’ 12 miles away, instructed by Arabic text messages, phone calls, and flyers. Abu Ahmed is a displaced Palestinian: "The Israeli occupation told people to go to Rafah and that it is a safe area. Today, they're telling us to get out of Rafah. Where will the people go? Where will all these crowds go? 1.5 million, or 2 million civilians, where will they go?" Israel's military said it had urged residents of Rafah to evacuate in a "limited scope" operation. It gave no specific reasons nor did it say if offensive action might follow. A senior Hamas official said the evacuation order was a "dangerous escalation" that would have consequences. Fears grow of a full-blown assault in Rafah, that has been long threatened by Israel against holdouts it says harbor thousands of Hamas fighters and potentially dozens of hostages. The war began after Hamas' cross-border raid on Oct. 7 in which 1,200 people were killed and 252 hostages taken, according to Israeli tallies. Since then, Israel's assault has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians and wounded 78,000, according to Gaza's health ministry.10 hours ago

- 00:55Gaza civil defense says Israel airstrikes hit Rafah homesReuters VideosSTORY: Israel told Palestinians to evacuate parts of Rafah on Monday in what appeared to be preparation for a long-threatened assault on Hamas holdouts in the southern Gaza Strip city where more than a million war-displaced people have been sheltering. Instructed by Arabic text messages, telephone calls, and flyers to move to what the Israeli military called an "expanded humanitarian zone" 20 km (7 miles) away, some Palestinian families lumbered out under chilly spring rain, witnesses said. Witnesses said the areas in and around Rafah to which Israel wants to move people are already crowded and there is almost no room for more tents to be added.15 hours ago
- 00:28Palestinians flee east Rafah as Israel 'encourages' evacuationReuters VideosSTORY: Israel's military said on Monday it had begun encouraging residents of Rafah to evacuate the southern Gazan city as part of a 'limited scope' operation, but did not immediately confirm media reports this was part of preparation for a ground assault. Seven months into its offensive against Hamas, Israel has said Rafah harbors thousands of the Palestinian Islamist group’s fighters and that victory is impossible without taking the city. But with more than a million displaced Palestinians sheltering there, the prospect of a high-casualty operation worries Western powers and neighboring Egypt.17 hours ago

- 00:48'Never again is now,' says Netanyahu on Holocaust Rememberance DayReuters VideosSTORY: "Eighty years ago, in the Holocaust, the Jewish people were totally defenseless against those who sought our destruction," Netanyahu said in English remarks that linked the World War Two atrocities to the current conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas. "We will defeat our genocidal enemies," he said. "'Never again' is now." Netanyahu made the speech during Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day at Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, in Jerusalem. This year's ceremony takes place as the war in Gaza rages on, and recently triggering pro-Palestinian protests in several U.S. campuses. The war began after Hamas stunned Israel with a cross-border raid on Oct. 7 in which 1,200 people were killed and 252 hostages taken, according to Israeli tallies. More than 34,600 Palestinians have been killed, 29 of them in the past 24 hours, and more than 77,000 have been wounded in Israel's assault, according to Gaza's health ministry. The bombardment has devastated much of the coastal enclave and caused a humanitarian crisis. Prospects for a ceasefire appeared slim on Sunday as Hamas reiterated its demand for an end to the war in exchange for the freeing of hostages, and Netanyahu flatly ruled that out. The annual Holocaust commemorations remember the six million Jews killed by the Nazis during the Second World War. On Monday (May 6) Israel will come to a standstill as a two-minute siren will be heard across the country.1 day ago

- 02:34Gaza truce hopes slim as Israel, Hamas trade blameReuters VideosSTORY: Video obtained by Reuters shows the rubble following what Palestinians said was an Israeli airstrike in the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip. And it comes amid what seem to be dwindling prospects for ceasefire talks in Cairo. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday flat-out rejected what he said were Hamas's demands for a potential truce. Netanyahu said the Palestinian Islamist group wanted the removal of all Israeli forces from Gaza, and a permanent end to the fighting, which would leave Hamas in power. He said, "the State of Israel cannot accept that." Hamas meanwhile, blamed Israel for the impasse. In a statement, Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh accused Netanyahu of "sabotaging efforts made through the mediators." A Palestinian official close to the mediation effort told Reuters on Sunday: "If Netanyahu doesn't change his mind, there will be no reason to stay." And the fighting continues: Israel soldiers at the Kerem Shalom crossing between Gaza and Israel inspected armored vehicles after Hamas claimed it had attacked the position on Sunday. Earlier in the day trucks carrying desperately-needed humanitarian aid passed through the crossing. But following the attack, Israel said the crossing had been closed. The war began after Hamas stunned Israel with a cross-border raid on Oct. 7 in which Israel says 1,200 people were killed and over 250 hostages taken. More than 34,600 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's subsequent assault, according to Gaza's health ministry. The bombardment has devastated much of the coastal enclave and caused a humanitarian crisis. Israel has been warning for months it plans to send troops into Rafah, the southern city bordering Egypt where more than a million displaced Gaza residents have taken refuge. Israel believes thousands of Hamas fighters are holed up in the city, along with potentially dozens of hostages. The United Nations on Friday warned such an operation would potentially put thousands more lives at risk. The Israeli military on Sunday released video of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant meeting commanders in Gaza. Gallant said there were signs Hamas did not intend to reach an agreement. He said, "this means strong military action in Rafah will begin in the very near future, and in the rest of the Strip. But the deadlock in Cairo continues to turn up the heat on Netanyahu. Thousands of Israelis protested on Saturday, demanding the prime minister accept a ceasefire agreement with Hamas that would see the remaining hostages brought home.1 day ago
- 02:24Hamas killing spree haunts Holocaust survivorsReuters VideosSTORY: 86-year-old Bellha Haim fled with her family as child from Poland during World War Two. And on October 7 last year, her grandson Yotam, like her a resident of a village near the Gaza border, was taken hostage by Hamas. He managed to escape, only to be accidentally shot dead by Israeli soldiers. The trauma drove Haim to return to Poland, where she will on Monday (May 6) take part in the "March of the Living" at the site of the Auschwitz death camp. The annual ceremony is timed to coincide with Israel's Holocaust memorial day. Holocaust commemorations this year have a searing significance for her and six other elderly survivors now deeply scarred by the Hamas attack that sparked the ongoing Gaza war. “What happened here on October 7th, it's impossible to believe. I see the huge picture mounted in the new library in Jerusalem with all those who were killed and murdered, it's impossible. To this day I cannot fathom. I'm running away from it.” A veteran campaigner for peace with the Palestinians, Haim said she would no longer pursue that activism. "Now what interests me is only my people," she added. Among those joining her will be 90-year-old Daniel Louz. His hometown Kibbutz Beeri lost a tenth of its residents to the Palestinian attackers. In some ways, he said, that ordeal was worse for him than the European war, when he escaped Nazi round-ups in his native France although half his family perished in Poland. “In France, as a child I suffered all kinds of post-traumas that I’ve learned to cope with, but in Be’eri, it was the first time that I felt the fear of death.” On October 7 last year, he woke up to the sound of Arabic yelling and gunfire. A neighboring house was riddled with bullets. Louz's was untouched. He says he imagined the souls of the six million Holocaust victims steering Hamas away from him.1 day ago
