Kids can go see a PG movie without a parent/guardian. Maybe some parents would think twice about letting a young child see a PG movie by him/herself, but it would by no means automatically result in an extra ticket sale. And a G movie simply doesn't attract as many viewers because it alienates anyone who doesn't want to go see a "kids movie."
Dumb movie, but in Alien vs Predator Requiem when the blonde girl gets pinned to a wall by a giant fucking shuriken that the predator tossed down a hallway. I guess the "Oh Shit!" came from surprise more than anything.

A 'whodunit'. The protagonists arent under constant threat from the antagonist. Interestingly enough, "Lust" is a good candidate for the biggest "what the fuck" moment in film. They didn't even have to show anything unlike a lot of torture porn films which would have just relished such a scene.
