According to some sources, this date is as early as 2356 bce, but it is more likely to have been in the 2nd millennium bce. The game was probably taken to Japan about 500 ce, and it became popular during the Heian period (794–1185).

- The Board & Pieces Use a standard 19x19 grid. There are 19 horizontal and vertical lines. You can use a board or make a grid yourself. Sometimes smaller boards are used.
