    • James Buchanan’s Early Years and Personal Life. James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791, in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania, to James Buchanan Sr. (1761-1833), a merchant who had emigrated from Ireland, and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan (1767-1833).

  8. James Buchanan was born in Pennsylvania in 1791. At age 23, he won election to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Six years later he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He spent the majority of the next 25 years in Congress. In 1845, Buchanan resigned to become secretary of state under President James K. Polk.
