Klemens von Metternich, or Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar Fürst von Metternich-Winneburg zu Beilstein, was an Austrian diplomat who was the Austrian Empire's foreign minister (1809–1848) and chancellor (1821–1848). He is remembered for his role in the Napoleonic Wars and for hosting the ‘Congress of Vienna’ in 1814–1815.
From 1821 to 1848, Metternich was the Chancellor of the Austrian Empire. He worked to maintain the power of kings and nobles. Metternich opposed both liberalism and nationalism, views which were becoming more popular at the time.
