The 103rd best film of 1994, which is to say another film that wants to be "Pulp Fiction" or something in that vein, "Mr. Right" hires two charismatic lead actors, Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell, then expects them to carry a movie with almost no compelling reason to exist.

Most people, when they go on dates, learn the name of the person with whom they are on the date. It is, generally speaking, seen as an essential part of the process. What then would you do if you were on a date (or a second date) and when you asked the name of the person opposite you, they refuse to answer?

This is the question Martha (Anna Kendrick) is faced with at one point in the new movie, Mr. Right. The amazing thing about the Paco Cabezas-directed, Max Landis-written, movie is that when Sam Rockwell's deranged hitman refuses to answer (for what it's worth, his name is Francis) Martha only has momentary hesitation about continuing to date him, and yet the movie manages to keep chugging along. It is just as believable a moment as anything else in the movie, and even if you mark that down as "not very," you simply won't care – within the world of this New Orleans-set film it's a more or less forgivable omission and the movie quickly moves past it.

There may be an added degree of quibble when Francis explains his pseudo-Force theory about physical objects just being islands with a sweeping current existing underneath them and then proceeds to throw a knife at Martha's head but, that too almost works. To be clear, the actual knife-throwing is completely unacceptable. It is the explanation of the islands and currents and how Francis can sense things and be so good at killing people but not dying himself that the audience can accept and move forward with; the knife-throwing, not so much.

Taking a step backwards here in an attempt to explain a movie that nearly defies explanation, at the outset of Mr. Right Martha is devastated when her fiancé cheats on her. Moving in with a friend, Sophie (Katie Nehra), Martha soon randomly bumps into this weird guy in the supermarket (Francis). Despite her knowing better, they go out on a date, hit it off, and while Francis has utterly absurd stories about his past and how he got a bad scar and just about everything else, Martha goes with it. As an audience, we believe these stories to be true because he is actually some sort of crazy hitman who dances his way into and out of danger (this clearly has something to do with his whole islands in the stream philosophy).

On paper, some movies don't seem like they could possibly gel, but on screen they manage to do more than just gel, they manage to be outstandingly entertaining. Mr. Right is a part of this group. The plot is lunacy and could certainly have more explanation. The characters are insane. Even so, almost the entirety of the film is brilliantly funny and...
