- An expensive Universal Western with grand Colorado locations and big stars, Night Passage comes close to being a classic, but not close enough. An excellent story builds up to an exciting midpoint, but corny thematics and a tendency to indulge James Stewart's 'family entertainment' values takes a toll.

Night Passage is a good enough genre offering, but the plot is slight and the story lacks the dark intensity that Mann, one thinks, would have given it. The story follows an overly familiar tale about two brothers (Stewart/Murphy), one bad, one good.
Night Passage: Directed by James Neilson. With James Stewart, Audie Murphy, Dan Duryea, Dianne Foster. A fired railroad man is re-hired and entrusted to carry a ten thousand dollar payroll in secret, even though he is suspected of being connected to outlaws.

Night Passage is a solid Western, but it's also not a very memorable one. Although written by veteran Western screenwriter Borden Chase, it lacks the overarching themes (e.g., redemption, family, civilization, etc.) that elevated the Mann-Stewart films.
Plot. On the way to meet his former boss -- railroad tycoon Ben Kimball -- Grant McLaine rescues a young boy, Joey Adams, from villain Concho. Ben informs Grant that his payroll has been robbed three times already by a gang led by Whitey Harbin and the Utica Kid. If Ben's workers do not get paid soon, they will all leave the end-of-track work camp.
