Penelope Buitenhuis (born 1963) is a Canadian film and television director and screenwriter. She is most noted as a two-time Directors Guild of Canada award nominee, receiving nods for the DGC Allan King Award for Best Documentary Film in 2002 for Tokyo Girls, and the DGC Award for Best Direction in a Feature Film in 2010 for A Wake.
Mini Bio. Penelope is an award winning writer and director with a distinguished career working in Europe, Japan, Canada and the US. Most recently she co-wrote and directed A Wake which won best feature at numerous festivals, receiving first prize for the screenplay at the Rhode Island Film Festival and nominated for the DGC best director award.

director STATEMENT. The radical storytelling of Fassbinder, Godard and Truffaut inspired me to write and direct. There was truthfulness and depth to their work and I had to go where that came from. Moving to Paris and then Berlin, I was determined to make cutting edge films focused on fierce, unique characters, especially women.
