Pope Gregory IX (Latin: Gregorius IX; born Ugolino di Conti; 1145 – 22 August 1241) was head of the Catholic Church and the ruler of the Papal States from 19 March 1227 until his death in 1241.

Gregory IX (born before 1170—died Aug. 22, 1241, Rome) was one of the most vigorous of the 13th-century popes (reigned 1227–41), a canon lawyer, theologian, defender of papal prerogatives, and founder of the papal Inquisition.

Hereupon the cardinals unanimously elected Ugolino on March 19, 1227, and he reluctantly accepted the high honor, taking the name of Gregory IX. Though he was already far advanced in age (being more than eighty years old), he was still full of energy.
Gregory IX, who had been a fugitive at Perugia since 1228, returned to Rome in February, 1230, upon the urgent request of the Romans, who connected an overwhelming flood of the Tiber with their harsh treatment of the pontiff.

GREGORY IX, POPE Pontificate: March 19, 1227, to Aug. 22, 1241; b. Hugo[lino] at Anagni, c. 1170; d. Rome. Hugolino was a member of the family of the counts of Segni. His father was a certain Mathias, who died prior to 1192, and his brother Adenulphus served as rector of Anagni.
This is Gregory IX – confrontational, obsessed, ‘a hate-filled stubborn old man’, as Kantorowicz delicately described him. Nobody (except the man himself) has ever questioned the zeal of Gregory's faith.
