- The Original School of Rock. In 1975, a 27-year-old Canadian musician got a job teaching at an elementary school in rural British Columbia. Hans Fenger (The Langley Schools Music Project): The Seventies were an odd time for me.
- The Screenplay. White used Fenger’s story as the inspiration for a screenplay about a down-on-his-luck rock singer who poses as a substitute teacher at a prep school — and forms a rock band with his students.
- Casting. In keeping with his usual style, Linklater steered away from casting professional Hollywood kids. Black: It’s Linklater. He’s gifted, famously, at picking people to be in his movies, starting with Dazed and Confused.
- Filming. Shooting began in and around New York on Dec. 2, 2002. Exterior shots of Horace Green were filmed at Wagner College in Staten Island, while the classroom scenes were filmed at Buckley Country Day School in Nassau County.
