Going into Smurfs: The Lost Village, you might expect a few things, and as the third film in this franchise in the last six years, they might not all be good. But what you might not expect is for the film to deal with issues of female identity in a predominantly male-driven society, or how difficult it can often be to try and find your purpose in life. But, the thing is that’s exactly the story at the heart of Smurfs: The Lost Village.

Directed by Kelly Asbury, The Lost Village brings audiences back into the microscopic world of The Smurfs, the lovable blue magical creatures living in their own secluded villages in the forest. However, this time The Lost Village is focusing almost exclusively on Smurfette (Demi Lovato), who, as the film illustrates in its opening narration, isn’t necessarily the most dynamic character in the Smurfs universe (has she ever really been?).

In a world where each of the Smurfs are named after their defining traits (the smart, scientific one is Danny Pudi’s Brainy, Joe Manganiello’s Hefty is the strongest Smurf in his village, etc.), Smurfette is a blind spot in the franchise. In fact, when you really look at Smurfette, compared to the rest of the characters, the only thing that separates her from all of the rest is that she’s a girl. That’s her defining trait, and it doesn’t make her the most interesting Smurf to watch or root for as a result.

The biggest surprise about Smurfs: The Lost Village is how it addresses and tries to correct one of the property’s most glaring flaws. Oh, if only the rest of the film had been as inventive or exciting.
