Five years and change after the Teen Wolf series finale brought the saga of MTV’s hairy hero to a satisfying-if-uneven conclusion, Scott McCall’s story continues in Teen Wolf: The Movie. The problem is, despite Teen Wolf starting out as a 1985 Michael J. Fox feature film, this incarnation turns out to work best in series form, and no amount of pushing and pulling to make it fit an extended-length canvas can obscure that. With an unwieldy 140-minute runtime, much of which is spent deep in the series’ lore and likely to wave off newcomers, this is very much a “fans-only” affair. Unfortunately, beyond the undeniable pleasure of seeing these characters again, those fans will likely be disappointed by a revival that feels like a litany of fan-service moments in search of a reason for being.

The script, by series creator Jeff Davis, picks up in the Teen Wolf’s home turf of Beacon Hill 15 years after the show’s 2017 finale, with erstwhile Alpha werewolf Scott (Tyler Posey) using his power over animals to assist people whenever he can. The decade-and-a-half time jump, despite only a third of that having passed in real time, was a wise decision due to the fact that Posey, at 31, is far past the point where he can credibly pass for a teen.

Soon enough the demonic Nogitsune (the big bad from season 3) reappears, intent on revenge and culminating in a finale that’s long on “The end is nigh!” portent but whose climactic monster-on-monster throwdown can’t escape the too-evident limitations of a made-for-TV budget. There’s also the matter of the mysterious resurrection of lost love Allison Argent (Crystal Reed), who died in Scott’s arms (also in season 3) and is now nursing a case of amnesia alongside a mad-on for werewolves. These star-crossed kids just can’t catch a break!

The climactic monster-on-monster throwdown can’t escape the too-evident limitations of a made-for-TV budget.

Teen Wolf: The Movie is directed by Russell Mulcahy, who helmed the first two Highlander films as well as 1994’s The Shadow. Always able to add a stylistic flourish even when the scripts weren’t holding up their end, Mulcahy does what he can to make “The Movie” in the title mean something, but despite his best efforts Teen Wolf is hopefully constrained by its scope.

Posey and Tyler Hoechlin, who is back as Scott’s werewolf mentor Derek Hale, benefit the most from being able to reprise these characters this many years later. In particular, it’s fun to have Hoechlin lean into his experience playing a superpowered dad on Superman & Lois to do something similar in the Teen Wolf sandbox as he deals with his 15-year-old son, Eli (Vincent Matti), not quite being able to wolf out like dear old dad. Performance anxiety, perhaps?

It’s also nice to have so many members of the expansive Teen Wolf cast make encore appearances here. Linden Ashby is a welcome presence as long-suffering Sheriff Stilinski, as is Seth Gilliam as Scott’s ally Dr. Deaton, and Holland Roden’s Lydia. The return of Reed as Allison, on the other hand, feels less like a necessary story element than it does the simple fulfillment of long-desired fanservice. Scott had his most awful loss with her death, a moment that propelled his growth for the rest of the run. Maybe it makes sense on paper to undo that, except some things remain unclear and strange due to the nature of her resurrection. For instance, is she the same age she was 15 years ago? If so, it doesn’t exactly make sense to just pick things up where they left off.

On the subject of returnees, the presence of so many familiar faces makes the absence of Dylan O’Brien’s Stiles so glaring. Regardless of the reasons behind O’Brien passing on this film, Stiles was integral enough on the show that his missing out on these events can’t help but strike a false chord. To a large extent this was likely out of the writers’ hands, but their failure to think of a plausible way around his absence works against Teen Wolf nonetheless.

It’s nice to see Scott McCall and his pack again, no doubt. But while longtime fans will likely be happy to spend time with their faves on a new adventure, Teen Wolf: The Movie doesn’t offer enough to displace the series finale as a perfectly acceptable place to end this story. It’s also too unwieldy and impenetrable for anyone who hasn’t already s...
